The Majority Strategies team shares a new case study highlighting how we combined data with direct mail to help a state legislative candidate unseat a four-term incumbent.

CASE STUDY: POLITICAL
TEXAS STATE HOUSE DISTRICT 59 – UNSEATING A 4-TERM INCUMBENT

The Background
After a three-way primary race, the 59th State House District race came down to a runoff between 4-term incumbent J.D. Sheffield and challenger Shelby Slawson. Sheffield was ranked the second most liberal Republican in the Texas House, out of step with the constituents he was elected to serve.

The Challenge
Despite being more ideologically aligned with the district, Slawson still had the uphill battle of unseating an incumbent. Additionally, in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic, Election Day changed from May to July, extending the campaign.

The Plan
To supplement Slawson’s hard work on the ground in the district, we developed a mail strategy that targeted new voters and those likely to vote in the general election but not the run-off special election, mailing them an absentee ballot application and chase piece.

The Results
Shelby Slawson won with over 61% of the vote, knocking off a 4-term incumbent. There is no Democrat running so Slawson is unopposed in the general election race for Representative of Texas’ 59th State House District.

We’re counting down the days to Election Day. It’s not too late! Contact our team to get started today.
